Salt Dough Egg Ornaments for Holiday Fun at Home

Can you believe the spring season is just around the corner? DIY projects are a perfect way to spend quality time with your family and discover new holiday traditions! Some of us grew up painting eggs, but what if you’re itching to try something a bit different? You might be surprised to know there are all kinds of materials around the house you can use to make unique holiday decorations.

Salt dough, for instance, lends itself to all sorts of shape making. Once baked thoroughly, it hardens and can last many years. It’s also easy to decorate salt dough using simple acrylic-based paints, which means you won’t have to buy a special (and expensive) kit like with painted eggs!

If you’re curious about switching things up this year and want to give our salt dough “egg” ornaments a spin, here’s what you’ll need… remember, creativity knows no bounds!

– batch or two of salt dough (see below)

– rolling pin

– ruler, to measure dough thickness

– spatula

– straw, for making holes

– parchment-paper covered baking sheets

– spray or acrylic paint

– paint pens, optional

– clear coat sealer, optional

– twine, ribbon

Ingredients for Salt Dough

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup salt
  • ½ water

First, we need to make the salt dough—and thankfully, it’s SO easy to do! Start by mixing 1 cup of flour, ½ cup of salt and ½ cup of water together in a bowl. Stir them together well until a dough forms. May need to add more flour to get the desired consistency for cutting out the eggs.

Using a roller, flatten out the salt dough to your desired thickness and cut out your shapes. You can use a store-bought cookie cutter for this, or you can easily make your own from any plastic container lid (see here for a good example of how to do this).

Poke a hole near the top so you can hang your ornaments later. Straws are an ideal tool for this step! Finally, place the salt dough Easter eggs on the parchment-covered baking sheets and bake at 320F for 20 mins.

Paint your egg ornaments in your desired colors and add their decorations.

Make your tree decoration with the instructions below and hang your ornaments!

To Make the Tree Decoration

Reuse a can that you may have around the house.

Find a stick to hang your ornaments outside and fill with sand to keep it upright.

Fill the top with a rock filler. This one just happened to match the container!

Paint the container a fun pattern, this one is a polka dot pattern!
