Free Webinar: Meditation & the Craft of the Heart Pt. I
Thursday, 9/17/2026
Much of modern life moves at the pace of rapid thought and immediate reactions. Our minds learn to operate at full speed, while our hearts struggle to keep up. The effects are familiar: a pervasive busyness hangs over our lives, our moments of rest are crowded with distraction or tinged by self-judgment, and many of us carry a vague sense that something is missing though we can't quite say what. Ancient Buddhist wisdom has a word for this: dukkha -- often translated as "suffering," but perhaps better described as a pervasive unsatisfactoriness or unsettledness that follows us wherever we go.
Our experience is shaped not only by what happens to us, but by how we meet what happens: the habits of attention we develop, and the qualities of heart we allow to arise -- or not -- in each moment. There is an art to this, a kind of craft, like learning to play an instrument or carve wood. Through practicing the simple art of attending closely to our experience, together with teachings that help guide attention and nurture the emotional field, we can begin to develop what might be called the craft of the heart.
In this three-part series, Doug will draw on his deep engagement with Buddhist contemplative traditions and his background as a philosopher to offer something both ancient and immediately practical. Sessions will combine guided meditation with contemplative reflection, inviting participants not just to think about these ideas but to encounter them directly in their own experience. No prior experience with meditation is necessary. Each session will stand on its own, while the series as a whole will form a coherent journey.
