Learn how to capture the beauty of natural plant material on paper! Eco-printing (Botanical Contact Printingrefers to the act of using plant materials to directly apply color and printed marks to textiles and paper. No additional paint or colorants are used—only an alchemical process using the elements of fire and water to express the natural color pigments of the plants. It is a contemporary application of the tradition of natural dyeing, and makes a simple and surprisingly beautiful art form!

During this workshop, participants will each create beautiful prints on watercolor paper. We’ll work with collected leaves and flowers and learn the simple tin can bundling process. Each participant will have the opportunity to make a print, which transfers the natural colors and shapes of the plant onto paper.

ABOUT TONYA LEMOS

A lifelong environmentalist and plant person, Tony(a) Lemos’ creative work is a work in progress. She believes art and creativity to be an integral part of the healing process. Her work centers around well-being, creativity, connection, and co-existence. As a Creative entrepreneur, Community Herbalist, and Artist she is inspired by all aspects of the natural world (plants, lichen, moss, and fungi).

Presently, her work includes eco-printing, relief printing, and alternative photography methods often combining mixed media and found objects. She also explores symbolism from her ancestry (Greek/Middle Eastern) and her deep connection to her present sense of place on Pocumtuc/Nipmuc territory, also known as Western Massachusetts—specifically Ashfield, MA and Conway, MA.

Tonya has worked as a community herbalist and educator for over 25 years, helping people connect with plants as allies for physical, mental, and spiritual healing. She currently teaches a botanical art studio program at Blazing Star Herbal School as well as a year-long annual herbal apprenticeship, which is now in its 22nd year.
