ABOUT ED SOURDIFFE

Ed Sourdiffe has a rare talent for helping things grow—whether plants or ideas. His lifelong passion for gardening took root early, evolving from a childhood hobby into a thriving career that led him to the prestigious title of Master Gardener.

Ed earned his Bachelor of Science degree in biology from Western New England University and pursued graduate studies at Oxford University. He also completed the National Park Service Ranger program at the University of Massachusetts and went on to serve as a Ranger for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. He is certified in many aspects of horticulture and landscaping.

As Head of Historic Gardens at Hancock Shaker Village—a living history museum in Western Massachusetts—Ed planned, planted, and maintained gardens true to Shaker tradition. He championed organic gardening techniques and cultivated a wide range of heirloom flowers, herbs, and vegetables. It was also at Hancock Shaker Village that Ed began cultivating ideas—interpreting the history of Shaker gardens and sharing his thoughtful, sustainable approach to their care. His deep knowledge and approachable style made him a sought-after speaker, known for educating audiences with warmth, humor, and insight. His talks have spanned everything from organic gardening basics to the art of growing tropical plants in New England.

Television viewers may recognize Ed as the resident plant and garden expert on Mass Appeal, the popular lifestyle program on NBC affiliate Channel 22. He’s a familiar face at garden centers, clubs, and museums, having given talks at venues such as Wistariahurst in Holyoke. At the invitation of PBS affiliate Channel 57, Ed has also presented at the Asparagus Festival in Hadley.

Ed’s design and landscaping work extends far beyond public gardens. He has built and maintained a wide variety of greenhouses—including a solar pit greenhouse—and his newest endeavor, a conservatory addition to his home. He has designed numerous private gardens. His own timber-frame cabin in Chester, which he built with the help of friends, sits on 34 park-like acres surrounded by carefully tended gardens. From heirloom and period gardens to water features, koi ponds, native and tropical plants, Ed’s horticultural interests are as diverse as they are deep. He continues to assist home gardeners and refine the remarkable landscape he calls home.
