ABOUT ANDREA STANLEY
Andrea and Christian Stanley are co-owners and co-founders of Valley Malt, Ground Up Grain and Coastal Queen.
They launched Valley Malt in 2009 to harness the potential of Northeast grains by malting and milling them. They were driven by their passion for sustainability, commitment to strengthen the local food system, and to support local farms. They forged strong partnerships with researchers, universities, farmers, brewers, distillers and bakers. In 2016, Andrea was honored by Food and Wine and Forbes Magazine as one of the 20 Most Innovative Women in Food and Drink.
In 2018 they established Ground Up, featuring the New American Mill. The mill is 4 feet wide and over 6,000 pounds, hand made in Elmore, Vermont by Andrew Hyen from local granite. The Stanley’s goal was to get more local grain milled into high quality flour and to strengthen communities by strengthening the local food system.
The pandemic was a turning point that highlighted the importance of local food infrastructure. The Stanleys' started the planning of a state-of-the-art mill designed to process larger quantities of grain while making flour more accessible and affordable for the community. They invested in storage solutions and received grants to support the next phase of their vision.
Coastal Queen, a state-of-the-art roller mill, started producing flour in the spring of 2026. Andrea and Christian continue to work closely with each trusted farm that supplies grains for their operation—the foundation of each flour milled at their facility in Holyoke, Massachusetts. The goal has always been to see more acres of grain, more thriving farms, more fresh and nutritious flour - all important signs of a more sustainable and resilient food system.
Each chapter of their story is a testament to their unwavering belief in local, sustainable, and world-class quality.
