When foraging for edibles, why not start by checking what's nearby in your own backyard? You might be surprised by what's hiding in plain sight! Blanche Cybele Derby has been foraging for edibles in the Valley for over 50 years. Join her as she shows some weeds and cultivated plants that are available in late spring and early summer throughout the local area—a chance to add some new tastes to your culinary repertoire!

  • Discover several easy ways to prepare some of the plants
  • Get tips on what wild edible plants are ready to pick in early summer
  • Receive handouts offering beneficial foraging resources and guidance
  • Participate in Q&A and ask Blanche your questions about foraging and wild edibles!

ABOUT BLANCHE CYBELE DERBY

Known in the community as the "Wild Weed Woman," Blanche has been foraging and incorporating wild foods into her diet since her teens. In the 1970s, she met author Ben Charles Harris, an authority on foraging who became her mentor shortly thereafter. He encouraged her to lecture and lead walks all around New England, which she has done for many years since.

Blanche has written and illustrated three books on wild plants, developed numerous recipes, produced three hour-long films, and published over 75 videos on YouTube. In addition, she is a frequent contributor to the Greenfield Recorder and writes articles for its quarterly special section, Healthy Life. You can also check out her posts about plants on her Facebook page, Forage: Field & Forest.
