Art in the Café
A Mayan Harvest:
An Exhibit of Mayan Art Celebrating the Gifts of Mother Earth
Showing this December in our Northampton co-op café!
Gratitude and reverence are fundamental qualities of the Mayan Culture. This exhibit features images of fruit, vegetables, harvesting, and the marketplace that are essential to our daily lives.
This exhibit is presented by the GuateMaya Art and Culture Connection. We work with Mayan artists around Lake Atitlan, Guatemala. Our vision is to foster deeper appreciation and connection between peoples of different cultures and help to bring into being a more equitable, just, and peaceful world. Sales help to support the artists and local initiatives that address poverty, health, and education.

Thank you for taking the time to appreciate this art. If you would like to purchase a painting and support this project, please fill out a purchase slip and put it in the envelope at the event.
The GuateMaya Art and Culture Connection features original art and crafts from traditional Mayan villages around Lake Atitlan in Guatemala. We work with over 30 native artists and artisans.
The paintings depict images that are an integral part of their life and culture and incorporate a variety of styles from art naif to contemporary. The crafts include weaving and bead work that also often incorporate designs that are based on centuries-old traditions. Both the art and the crafts are important ways the artists and artisans maintain their Mayan heritage.
The project helps to support the artists, the local economy and grassroots initiatives in the communities we work with. Inspired by the richness of the culture and the character of the people, our vision is to utilize this art and the crafts as a means of connecting people across borders and cultures and foster deeper understanding, mutual respect and cooperation among peoples of the world.
Yours in Gratitude and Connection,
Imre and Lorna Kepes
