Art in the Café: Artwork by Molly Ericson

Our June Art in the Northampton Café gallery features paintings by Molly Ericson!

My Wings series of paintings is inspired by both my love of bright, bold colors and painting wild life. I was interested in the juxtaposition of using bold, vibrant colors while also trying to depict delicate wings. With most of my paintings, I like to start by having several blank canvases and working on all of the backgrounds around the same time. The beginning involves very little planning and is one of my favorite parts. Using mostly water colors and acrylics, I’ll sort of just go with the flow and see what works best with what. I’ll do a lot of layering and often throw paint at the canvas. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn’t and gets covered up, but that’s part of the fun. Once I feel like the background is done, then I’ll go into more of a planning and sketching mode based on what is already on the canvas. This is when I’ll usually incorporate oil paints along with the acrylic and watercolors—sometimes adding charcoal and pastels.

I have been painting and drawing since I was a kid and because I am mostly self-taught, I don’t have a structured set of rules that I go by; my artwork is based primarily off of instinct and what I’m interested in exploring.

I sell all of my work and if you are interested in any of my pieces or have something specific in mind, feel free to contact me! Thanks so much!
