Our March Art in the Northampton Café gallery features paintings by Donna Meller!

Over the years, my passion for art led me to study art history, fine art, and graphic design. I have explored a variety of mediums and forms of expression. I have been active in artist communities, to include Northampton Center for The Arts, and Women’s art groups.

For the past few years, I have focused on portrait painting, and most recently, have been creating a series featuring inspirational women. I am drawn to vibrant hues and enjoy including a personal element in each image that represents the individual’s story or legacy.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg (RBG), the late Supreme Court Justice and champion for gender equality, was one of my early subjects. I began her portrait before she passed away, and following her passing, I added angelic white forms lifting from her lapel to symbolize her enduring spirit and influence.

In my portrait of Senator Elizabeth Warren, she wears a bold “Persist” earring—a nod to her famous mantra, “Nevertheless, she persisted.” This unconventional accessory replaces her usual small pearl post to highlight her unapologetic determination and advocacy. For Stacey Abrams, I included a floating “Vote” pin as a tribute to her relentless work in protecting voting rights and empowering communities.

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) stands in front of the Puerto Rican “Lares flag,” which honors her Puerto Rican heritage and the historical significance of the flag as a symbol of resilience and liberation. Kamala Harris is surrounded by a combination of color strokes representing her Indian, Jamaican, and American roots, reflecting her multicultural heritage and the barriers she has broken as Vice President.

Also on display here are portraits of friends and family members, as well as a few animal portraits. I create primarily for personal satisfaction and creative expression. I hope my paintings connect with viewers and spark inspiration and joy.
