Our January Art in the Northampton Café gallery features alcohol ink works on yupo paper from local artist Sharon Matrishon!

My name is Sharon Matrishon. I grew up in Northampton and live in the Florence section of town now. I think I was born with artistic tendencies. I would say it started with my first big box of Crayola crayons under the Christmas tree. This was my most cherished present. I loved the smell, the names of the colors, cornflower, raw umber, lemon yellow, vermilion.

As I approached my teen years, I guess you could say my creativity leaned toward my wardrobe, a mix of long colorful skirts, short skirts, always worn with some sort of funky socks and combat boots. When my first child arrived, I started making elaborate cakes for birthdays. I once made an electrolux vacuum cleaner cake for a little boy I took care of. He had a fascination with them. Art for me has many forms. I find unusual things to put in my garden. I use found objects in different ways. Photography is another art form I enjoy. I also painted seasonal pictures on the windows at the school I worked at.

Years ago I took a couple of alcohol ink classes at the Northampton Senior Center. I quickly became obsessed with Alcohol Ink Painting! I went out and bought my own supplies right away. I couldn’t get enough of it. I inked a glass table, a lamp shade, coasters, and many, many paintings. For me, it is an art form that surprises you at every drop of ink! I continue looking for new opportunities to try new mediums.

Each of my paintings are original, not prints. I try to repurpose frames to make art affordable for all. When I buy art, I want to bring it home and hang it up right away. I think everyone should be able to have an original piece of art in their home. I hope you enjoy my art as much as I enjoy making it!

I see art everywhere in everything!

If you would like to support the artist with a purchase, please fill out the request form and drop it in the envelope in the café!
